All About Doodles

Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, Sheepadoodles, Double Doodles

What is a Doodle?

Doodles have quickly become one of the most popular dogs to own across the United States. However, with so many variations of these lovable pups, many people often forget what kind of dog a doodle actually is. The technical name for a doodle is a “poodle crossbreed” or “poodle hybrid”; simply put, a doodle is the offspring of a purebred poodle that has been crossbred with another purebred dog breed.

You can typically find out which breeds are in a certain doodle by taking a look at its name; for example, a Labradoodle is the result of breeding a poodle with a Labrador retriever, and a Goldendoodle is the result of breeding a poodle with a Golden retriever. Mixing these breeds produces a healthy “designer” dog that is loyal, friendly, intelligent, and as close to no shed as you’ll ever get.

Benefits of Owning a Doodle

  • Hypoallergenic: Because Doodles are born with Poodle DNA, each puppy has a very high likelihood of being hypoallergenic. This is especially important for families in more suburban and urban areas to consider because people living in these areas are at greater risk for dog allergies.
  • Intelligent: Doodles are known for being incredibly smart and therefore easy to train. These dogs were originally bred to be service dogs and assistance dogs because of the quick-to-learn quality that Poodles, Labradors, and Golden Retrievers each possess. Doodles can learn fun new tricks quickly, and their owners can be assured that they will swiftly pick up on obedience training from an early age.
  • Sociable: Doodles love to be around people, with activity levels ranging from relaxed and laid-back to high energy and playful. Their friendliness and love of socializing make them wonderful family dogs, especially for families with smaller children. Kids love being able to run around in circles with their family dog during the day and then being able to cuddle up with the dog in the evenings; doodles fit the bill for these needs.
  • Minimal Shedding: There is nothing worse than getting dog hair all over your clothes, furniture, and home. Hair takes forever to clean and is almost impossible to fully get rid of. That’s another reason why doodles are so popular; despite their fluffy, teddy bear-esque coats, their Poodle genes reduce their shedding by nearly 100%. Doodles are one of the only breeds in which owners can get all the benefits of a fluffy dog without the consequences of a sea of hair covering everything in their homes.

Types of Doodles

Labradoodles

Labradoodles are a crossbreed between a Poodle and a Labrador Retriever.  Labradoodles are one of the most popular doodles available. These dogs are extremely friendly, intelligent, and can be trained very easily; this is a result of mixing two breeds with excellent temperaments.  Labradoodles also come in virtually any coat color there is as a result of the variety of shades in both the Poodle and Labrador breeds. Labradoodles are known for being incredibly loyal around those that they know and are also very enthusiastic towards unfamiliar faces.  Labradoodles are also good with other dogs and pets in the house due to their friendly and outgoing nature. Labradoodles love people and are born people-pleasers.

Goldendoodles

Goldendoodles are a cross between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever.  Much like Labradoodles, these pups are intelligent, incredibly family-friendly, and are very easy to train.  Golden retrievers have often been ranked as the best dog breed in the country, so crossing this breed with Poodles creates a pup with the perfect mix of wonderful temperament and a hypoallergenic, no-shed coat.  Goldendoodles tend to have longer, wavier coats than their Labradoodle relatives. These dogs are also incredibly upbeat and playful dogs; however, they are also known for being gentle around humans. These qualities make them perfect for high energy families with children.

Sheepadoodles

Sheepadoodles are a cross between an Old English Sheepdog and a Poodle.  This breed is perfect for allergy sufferers because they are hypoallergenic and don’t shed.  Due to their Sheepdog genes, their coats are usually a beautiful mix of black and white. Sheepadoodles are also popular for their adaptability and sensitivity to human emotions.  They are also very strong and have an athletic, muscular build. Sheepadoodles tend to be large dogs once fully grown and are truly gentle giants; they are extremely playful and can be protective of the people that they love. These dogs are quite loyal and make wonderful companions for people of all ages.

Double Doodles

Double doodles can either be a cross between a Goldendoodle or Labradoodle or can be any combination of a Poodle, Golden Retriever, and Labrador Retriever.  These dogs are often lovingly referred to as “teddy bears” due to their adorable fluffy coats. Double doodles are extremely cheerful and playful, and despite their fluffiness they have a low amount of shedding.  These dogs love to please their owners and therefore are quite easy to train and socialize from an early age. Double doodles do not tend to act aggressive or overly cautious towards strangers, making them the perfect pups for families who are on the more social side.
